The city of Vancouver, Washington, came together on Memorial Day to honor the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives in service to the United States. The Community Military Appreciation Committee, in collaboration with the Fort Vancouver National Historical Site, the Historic Trust, the National Park Service, and the city of Vancouver, organized a poignant ceremony that lasted nearly two hours.
U.S. Representative Marie Gluesenkamp-Perez was among the speakers who addressed the gathering, emphasizing the deep sacrifices that have built and sustained the nation. Vancouver Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle, Vancouver Police Chief Troy Price, state representative Sharon Wylie, and retired Navy Captain Marv Serhan also shared their reflections on the significance of the day.
Ron Powers, chair of the Community Military Appreciation Committee, highlighted the importance of Memorial Day as a sacred day of remembrance. ‘It is a day when we pause as a nation to remember the men and women of our armed forces who gave their lives in service to our country and in defense of the freedoms we enjoy every day,’ he stated.
The ceremony featured a military flyover, the firing of a cannon, and a rifle salute. The solemn notes of Taps and Amazing Grace filled the air, and the Vancouver Community Concert Band played ‘Going Home’ along with the songs of each branch of service. A dove release symbolized peace and remembrance for those who have fallen.
Organizers also set up a Missing Man Table, explaining its symbolism as a tribute to those who are no longer with us. This powerful display served as a reminder of the personal sacrifices made by service members and their families.
Community and Faith in Focus
The event underscored the community’s commitment to honoring its military heritage and the values of faith and family that underpin it. Such gatherings not only pay tribute to the fallen but also strengthen the bonds within the community, reminding all of the shared values that unite them.
