Pasadena’s fireworks task force will ramp up enforcement to help people celebrate America’s 250th birthday responsibly, city officials announced Friday.
Fireworks Safety Concerns
Each year, fireworks are responsible for an estimated 30,000 fires across the country and nearly 10,000 injuries, according to Pasadena officials. Most violations are misdemeanors, which can lead up to one year in jail and fines up to $5,000.
Officials reminded the public that it is illegal to possess, sell, use or discharge any fireworks, including those considered safe and sane, and that there is a zero-tolerance policy for violators.
“Skip the fireworks, choose safety, choose community, choose each other. And by doing so, we will keep Pasadena safe, strong and vibrant,” Chief Assistant City Prosecutor Tim Wellman said.
Community Events
While the city will not be putting on a fireworks show this year, other community events will be held throughout the holiday weekend. FoodieLand, Pasadena’s annual food festival, will take place at the Rose Bowl and will feature over 250 food vendors. The event will also showcase live music and a drone show on July 4.
Officials also warned of heat-related illnesses and reminded residents to take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Residents were asked to not leave their children unattended and to keep their pets indoors.
“We want to urge you to celebrate and have a great time with family and friends, but we urge you to do so responsibly,” Fire Chief Chad Augustin said.
