Paramount removes three contestants from MTV’s “The Challenge” after racial slur incident

Paramount+ announced that three competitors were removed from the newest season of MTV’s long‑running reality competition, The Challenge: Cutthroat, following a reported incident involving a racial slur. Host T.J. Lavin entered the house on Wednesday without Leo Dionicio, Josh Goldstein and Nelson Thomas, stating, “Leo, Nelson and Josh all broke the code of conduct here on ‘The Challenge,’ so they’re all gone.”

Details of the alleged incident

According to reporting by Page Six, Dionicio, who is Black, used the N‑word during a game and Goldstein, who is White, repeated it. Thomas became angry over Goldstein’s use of the word and later damaged the kitchen, prompting production to remove all three contestants.

Thomas confirmed part of the account on X, writing, “I let my emotions take over, broke dishes, destroyed the kitchen and violated the code of conduct. That’s on me.” He also said Goldstein apologized privately and urged him to address the situation publicly, adding, “Saying you have Black friends doesn’t give you a pass to use the N‑word.”

Contestants’ reactions

Dionicio discussed his removal on Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio’s podcast, claiming he was unfairly punished. “I was really, really upset because what was said was super ignorant,” he said, adding that he believed one contestant should have been fined, another removed, and that he should not have been punished at all.

Devenanzio responded, “I think what’s understood is that they have to have a rule, and it has to apply to everybody equally.” Dionicio later acknowledged that all participants signed the same agreement, noting, “I know we all signed the same contract… It’s just frustrating because I didn’t really think that would apply to me.”

Paramount’s stance and past controversy

Paramount declined to comment on the specific actions that led to the disqualifications. A source familiar with the production confirmed that Bunim/Murray Productions enforces a clear code of conduct and that the three cast members were removed after violating it.

The incident echoes a 2023 controversy on Paramount’s “Big Brother,” where a White contestant, Luke Valentine, was removed for using the N‑word, while a Black contestant, Kirsten Elwin, faced no apparent penalty for the same language. At the time, critics argued the network applied a double standard.

OutKick’s analysis suggests that this time Paramount appears to have enforced the rule equally, removing both the Black and White participants who used the slur. However, the network’s refusal to provide full details leaves some uncertainty.

What this means for reality‑TV conduct policies

The situation highlights the importance of consistent enforcement of conduct policies in reality television, especially when language with racial implications is involved. Viewers and participants alike expect that rules apply uniformly, regardless of a contestant’s background.

Paramount’s handling of the matter may set a precedent for future productions under its umbrella, signaling a commitment to equal application of its code of conduct.
