Three Palm Beach Health Network hospitals are utilizing new and innovative technology to protect newborn babies. The Infant Safety System allows hospitals to capture images of newborn footprints to help identify babies in case of an emergency.
The CertaScan device captures high-resolution newborn footprints that can be used to identify babies. This technology is recommended by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children because, like fingerprints, footprints are unique to each baby and can be used for identification throughout the baby’s life.
Benefits of the New Technology
The new system replaces the old ink and paper system used previously, which had limitations such as lost or smudged prints. The CertaScan device provides a more reliable and efficient way to capture and store newborn footprints.
The footprints and security photos are then stored in the newborn’s electronic medical record, and they are also accessible online on the First Footprint website free of cost. The feedback from the hospital staff has been positive, with many appreciating the lack of messy ink and the ease of use of the new technology.
