Palm Beach County school district police officers are participating in defensive tactics training to sharpen their skills before the new school year begins.
Training Focuses on Controlled Environment
On Thursday, officers engaged in one-on-one hand-to-hand combat exercises in Delray Beach, focusing on takedowns, positioning, and striking techniques. The training aims to ensure officers are prepared for any situation.
“They are doing summertime training, defensive tactics, training. So it’s, it’s something that we do over and beyond what our state mandates are,” said Chief Sarah Mooney of the Palm Beach County School District Police.
Officers practiced verbal commands, controlling individuals’ arms, and safely bringing them to the ground without causing unnecessary injury.
Importance of Techniques
The district emphasized the importance of these techniques, particularly when dealing with individuals who may be angry, upset, or unable to process what is happening.
While Thursday’s training focused on one-on-one combat, the department also trains extensively in de-escalation, mental health response, and handling hostile events alone.
