Painted Turtles, Sandstone Bluffs, and the St. Louis Park Most Locals Have Never Visited

Most people driving through Oakville on a Tuesday afternoon have no idea that just a few hundred feet from the traffic and strip malls, a limestone cave mouth opens into a hillside above the Mississippi River floodplain. Cliff Cave County Park sits at the southeastern edge of St. Louis County, and it is, without exaggeration, one of the most rewarding outdoor destinations the city has to offer — and one of the least crowded.

I stumbled onto this place years ago following a tip from a ranger at another park who said, almost in passing, “If you want something genuinely wild that still feels like St. Louis, go to Cliff Cave.” He was right. The park covers roughly 526 acres of river bottomland, forested ridgelines, and rugged bluffs, and it sits within the Jefferson County line near where the Meramec River feeds into the Mississippi. The scale of the landscape surprises you the moment you step out of the car.

The main draw is the trail system, which winds through a mix of habitats in a relatively compact area. The River Scene Trail is the one to do first. It follows the edge of the Mississippi bottomland, dipping through stands of cottonwood and silver maple before climbing to open bluff faces where you get sweeping views of the river corridor. On a clear morning, the light off the water is something close to cinematic. Bring binoculars. Great blue herons work the shallows constantly, and during migration season the birding here is exceptional.

The cave itself — Cliff Cave — is gated to protect the resident bat colony, but you can walk right up to the entrance and peer into the cool dark, which is its own kind of thrill. Rangers with St. Louis County Parks run occasional guided cave tours when conditions allow, and those are absolutely worth booking in advance if your timing is right. The cave is a Missouri Natural Area designation, which tells you something about its ecological significance.

What makes the park feel special beyond the scenery is how genuinely undeveloped it remains. There are no concessions, no crowds, no background hum of the city. The trails are well-marked but not over-engineered. You will share the paths with deer, the occasional red fox, and painted turtles sunning themselves on logs along the low-water crossings. Children absolutely love it here, and it handles a family outing just as well as it handles a solo walk where you want to think for an hour.

Parking is free, the trails are open year-round, and the park is managed by St. Louis County Parks with care and consistency. Getting here is straightforward — take Telegraph Road south into Oakville and follow the signs toward Cliff Cave Road. The drive itself, once you drop below the ridge and the Mississippi bottomland opens up around you, starts the adventure before you even park.

This is the St. Louis that doesn’t make the tourism brochures, and that’s exactly why it should be your next weekend morning. Pack a lunch, wear shoes you don’t mind muddying, and give yourself at least two hours. You’ll probably stay three.
