Paddle, Hike, and Breathe: A Perfect Day on the Youghiogheny River Trail Near Uniontown

There is a moment, maybe two miles into a ride along the Youghiogheny River Trail, when the trees close in overhead, the river appears on your left like something out of a painting, and you completely forget that you were ever stressed about anything. I had that moment on a Tuesday morning in early October, and I have been chasing it ever since.

The Youghiogheny River Trail — the “Yough Trail” to anyone who has spent five minutes in southwestern Pennsylvania — is one of the great multi-use rail-trails in the eastern United States. Stretching roughly 70 miles from Connellsville down through Ohiopyle and beyond, the trail is easily accessible from Uniontown and the surrounding Fayette County communities. The Connellsville trailhead, just a short drive north of Uniontown, is one of the most popular and practical entry points for locals and visitors alike. Park the car, lace up your shoes or unload a bike, and you are on your way.

The trail itself follows the old route of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, which means the grade is almost entirely flat — a genuine gift if you are not a hardcore cyclist or if you happen to be traveling with children or older family members. The crushed limestone surface is well-maintained and wide enough that hikers, joggers, and cyclists coexist without anyone feeling crowded. On a weekday, you can go long stretches without seeing another soul, just you and the river and the herons standing motionless in the shallows.

What makes this trail genuinely special, beyond the scenery, is how much it reveals about the industrial and natural history of this region. You pass through old railroad towns, over iron bridges, and beneath canopies of oak and maple that turn absolutely incandescent in the fall. Interpretive signage along the route gives context to what you are seeing — this was a working corridor once, moving coal and coke and goods through one of the most productive industrial valleys in the country. Now it moves people quietly through something that has become, against all odds, deeply peaceful.

Wildlife sightings are common and worth mentioning: great blue herons, bald eagles, white-tailed deer, and the occasional river otter have all been reported along this stretch. Bring binoculars if you have them. You will not regret it.

Restroom facilities and parking are available at the Connellsville trailhead, and several small towns along the route offer places to stop for water or a snack. The trail connects to restaurants and cafes if you plan your turnaround point well — there is nothing quite like earning a meal with a few miles on your legs.

Whether you come for a casual two-mile stroll or a full out-and-back adventure, the Yough Trail delivers something that is increasingly rare: uninterrupted, uncomplicated time outdoors. Uniontown sits in one of the most naturally beautiful corners of Pennsylvania, and this trail is among the best ways to truly feel that. Do yourself a favor and set a morning aside for it soon.
