Oxford ramps up security for Ole Miss‑LSU showdown as Lane Kiffin returns

Oxford, Miss. – The city is preparing a heavy security presence for Saturday’s Ole Miss‑LSU football game, the first weekend since former Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin returned to town as LSU’s new leader. Police officials say the combined effort of local officers, state patrol, and out‑of‑state mounted units is intended to ensure a safe environment for fans and players alike.

Mounted units and out‑of‑state assistance

On Tuesday, the Mobile, Alabama Police Department announced that its mounted crowd‑control unit will be in Oxford from Thursday, Sept. 17 through Saturday, Sept. 19, working alongside local law‑enforcement. The City of New Orleans also pledged mounted police to assist on the Ole Miss campus, while the Louisiana State Patrol will send additional troopers to the town for the road game.

Local officials urge hospitality and calm

Oxford Mayor Pete Golding appealed to residents and visitors to show the town’s famed Southern hospitality. “This place has always been about good people and how they make other fans feel,” Golding said. “Let’s not lose that over a game or a person.” He encouraged fans to arrive early, be loud, and respect one another.

Kiffin’s perspective

LSU coach Lane Kiffin acknowledged the heightened attention but downplayed safety concerns for his players. “You don’t have anything to worry about as far as attention on you all week,” Kiffin told his team. “There’s going to be a lot of attention and hatred on me, but you just get to go play.”

Security measures and fan expectations

The city will keep the team’s lodging location confidential until the night before the game. Authorities expect a large police presence around Kiffin and the LSU squad throughout the weekend. While the rivalry between the Rebels and Tigers has historically sparked intense emotions, officials hope the added resources will keep the atmosphere orderly.

Fans can anticipate a lively tailgate scene in the Grove and a bustling downtown, but with the added safety net of mounted police, state patrol, and federal assistance, Oxford aims to deliver a memorable yet secure football weekend.
