Hillsborough County issues 60‑day rabies alert for Gibsonton area after cat tests positive

Hillsborough County health officials have placed a 60‑day rabies alert on a portion of the Gibsonton area following the confirmation that a local cat tested positive for the deadly virus. The animal, which had no known rabies vaccination, was found dead near U.S. Highway 41 and Alice Avenue.

Alert zone defined

To contain any potential spread, the department has drawn clear boundaries for the alert zone: the Alafia River to the north, Bullfrog Creek to the south, Hillsborough Bay to the west, and Alafia Street to the east. Residents within this perimeter are asked to remain vigilant and follow the safety recommendations outlined below.

Rabies statistics in Hillsborough County

According to the latest state data from the Florida Department of Health, Hillsborough County has recorded 295 rabies cases in both humans and animals – including possible exposures – so far this year. That figure represents an increase of 52 cases compared with the same period last year, underscoring the importance of continued public‑health vigilance.

What rabies is and why prompt action matters

Rabies is a viral disease that is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. It is transmitted primarily through the bites or scratches of infected animals. Because the virus can incubate for weeks or even months before symptoms become evident, immediate medical care after any potential exposure is critical.

Recent regional cases

Over the summer, neighboring Pasco County confirmed two rabies cases in raccoons, while Polk County reported an unvaccinated feral cat that also tested positive. These incidents illustrate that the virus is present in local wildlife populations and that pet owners must stay proactive.

Veterinary guidance for pet owners

Veterinarians are urging all pet owners to ensure their animals are up‑to‑date on rabies vaccinations and to monitor for any abrupt behavioral changes. Dr. Anchal Thomas, an emergency veterinarian at VEG ER for Pets in South Tampa, explained the warning signs to watch for in domestic animals.

“If you notice your pet wobbling, having trouble swallowing, or refusing to eat or drink, those could be early signs of rabies,” Dr. Thomas said. “Repeated licking or biting at an injury may indicate the animal was bitten by a rabid creature.”

Dr. Thomas also noted that rabies symptoms differ from the rapid onset of Bufo toad poisoning, which can cause bright red gums and vomiting within minutes. Rabies, by contrast, progresses slowly, giving owners a window to seek veterinary care if they suspect exposure.

Steps residents should take

  • Avoid physical contact with stray animals, wildlife, or any animal that appears sick or injured.
  • If you are bitten or scratched by an unfamiliar animal, wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water and seek immediate medical attention.
  • Ensure all pets are current on their rabies vaccinations; contact your veterinarian if you are unsure of your pet’s status.
  • Report any stray or potentially rabid animals to the Hillsborough County Animal Services or local law enforcement.

Community response

County officials stress that the alert is a precautionary measure designed to protect both people and pets. By following the recommended steps, residents can help limit the spread of rabies and keep families safe.

For more information, residents can contact the Hillsborough County Health Department or visit the Florida Department of Health website.
