Sunland Park Breaks Ground on Phase 4 Street Improvements in Anapra

Sunland Park, N.M. – On Tuesday the City of Sunland Park officially broke ground on the fourth phase of its Anapra neighborhood street‑construction program. The ceremony marked the start of work on Calle Carrosel and Obregón, two key thoroughfares that will receive new concrete pavement, accessible sidewalks, driveway pads and a host of other improvements.

Project details and timeline

The $1.38 million contract, awarded to a local Sunland Park company, calls for the replacement of more than 1,000 feet of water line with new hydrants and service connections. The design was recently revised to provide additional clearance for emergency vehicles, ensuring that first‑responders can navigate the streets quickly and safely.

Mayor Javier Perea explained that the upgrades are part of a broader effort to protect the community from flooding. “One thing the community is in a bit of a bowl and all of the infrastructure that we’ve put up to today to make sure that the water doesn’t stay within that community and get pushed out into the Rio Grande has been completed, but this is going to continue adding to that infrastructure,” he said.

Benefits for residents

The new sidewalks will be built to meet accessibility standards, making it easier for families, seniors and individuals with mobility challenges to move safely around the neighborhood. Driveway pads will provide a smoother transition between private property and the public road, reducing wear on vehicles and improving overall traffic flow.

Replacing the aging water line is expected to enhance water pressure and reliability for homes and businesses in Anapra. The addition of modern hydrants will also improve fire‑suppression capabilities, a critical factor in a community that sits in a low‑lying area prone to occasional flash‑flood events.

Construction schedule

Mayor Perea indicated that the construction phase is projected to last roughly five months, weather permitting. The city has coordinated with local utility providers to minimize service interruptions, and residents have been asked to follow posted signage and detour routes while work is underway.

City officials emphasized that the project is being funded through a combination of municipal bonds and state infrastructure grants, reflecting Sunland Park’s commitment to investing in long‑term community resilience without raising taxes.

Community response

Local business owners and neighborhood groups have expressed support for the project, noting that improved streets and water infrastructure will boost property values and attract new investment to the area. “Better roads mean safer deliveries and happier customers,” said one shop owner who asked to remain unnamed.

The city will hold a public meeting next month to provide updates on progress and address any concerns from residents. Officials encourage anyone with questions to attend or to contact the Sunland Park Public Works Department directly.

Looking ahead

Phase 4 completes the fourth of several planned improvements under the Anapra streets initiative. Future phases will focus on additional roadway resurfacing, street‑lighting upgrades and the creation of green buffers to further mitigate flood risk.

Mayor Perea concluded, “These investments are about more than just pavement; they’re about protecting families, supporting local businesses and ensuring that Sunland Park remains a safe, thriving place to call home.”
