Owatonna Native Jena Hanson Crowned 73rd Princess Kay of the Milky Way

Owatonna celebrates as native Jena Hanson was crowned the 73rd Princess Kay of the Milky Way, an annual competition that highlights young women with strong ties to Minnesota’s dairy sector. The announcement came after a weekend of finalist events in Minneapolis and was shared on the Princess Kay Facebook page.

What the Princess Kay Competition Entails

The Princess Kay of the Milky Way contest is open to women ages 18‑24 who have a direct, active connection to the dairy industry. Contestants must first win their county’s Dairy Princess title, then travel to Minneapolis for a series of interviews, speeches, and mock media sessions. Over the weekend, finalists also attend leadership workshops and networking opportunities.

Jena Hanson’s Path to the Crown

Hanson, a senior at the University of Wisconsin‑River Falls pursuing a Bachelor’s in Dairy Management, earned her county title earlier this year. The 2025 Princess Kay, Malorie, noted in the announcement video that Jena enjoys snowboarding and fishing and has worked for dairy farms throughout Steele County.

After a competitive selection process that narrowed the field to ten finalists, Hanson emerged as the winner on Wednesday, the day before the Minnesota State Fair opens. As Princess Kay, she will serve as an ambassador for the dairy industry throughout the coming year, promoting dairy education and supporting farmers across the state.

Butter Sculpture Tradition at the State Fair

One of the most beloved traditions of the Princess Kay title is the creation of a life‑size butter sculpture of the winner. Jena’s likeness will be carved in the Dairy Building during the first two days of the fair, a tribute that draws thousands of fairgoers each year.

The sculpture not only celebrates the new Princess Kay but also showcases the skill of the fair’s dairy artisans, reinforcing the cultural importance of dairy to Minnesota’s agricultural heritage.

Community Impact

Hanson’s achievement shines a spotlight on Owatonna and the broader Steele County farming community. Local leaders praised her dedication to dairy education and her role as a positive role model for young women interested in agriculture.

“Jena’s commitment to our industry and her academic pursuits embody the values we cherish in our community—hard work, faith, and family,” said a representative from the Steele County Farm Bureau.

The Princess Kay title also provides a platform for outreach programs, school visits, and public speaking engagements that emphasize the importance of dairy to the state’s economy and nutrition.

Looking Ahead

Throughout her year as Princess Kay, Hanson will travel across Minnesota to attend dairy‑related events, meet with legislators, and advocate for policies that support family farms. Her role aligns with the state’s ongoing efforts to preserve agricultural traditions while encouraging innovation in dairy management.

Residents of Owatonna and the surrounding region can look forward to seeing their hometown champion represent Minnesota on a statewide stage, reinforcing the strong ties between local families, faith, and the agricultural backbone of the state.
