Oviedo native and Olympic medalist Jenny Simpson has been discharged from the hospital after collapsing earlier this month during a track event in North Carolina. Simpson, who serves as Fleet Feet’s chief running officer, was hospitalized on June 17 after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest during the Sir Walter Running Pop Up Mile event.
According to Fleet Feet, Simpson received immediate lifesaving care, including CPR and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), before being transported to UNC Rex Hospital in Raleigh. She was later transferred to Duke University Hospital.
Focus on Rest and Healing
For the time being, Jenny will remain in North Carolina with her husband, Jason, and their two pups, where her focus will be on rest and healing. The three-time Olympian is one of the most accomplished American female runners in history.
Simpson has been featured on WESH 2 News several times, including her and her husband’s planned yearlong “Run USA Tour” in 2025 to run in all 50 states. “My running start was here in Orlando, and I bought my very first pair of running shoes at Track Shack,” Simpson said during a previous interview. “If you need a community, you don’t have to be fast. You don’t have to be super fit. All you need is a pair of running shoes, show up at your local running store, and that’s a place where you can belong.”
