A recent Wall Street Journal column by Peggy Noonan, “Becoming Who You Are Ain’t for Sissies,” resonated with many. The column discussed the importance of perseverance and determination in overcoming adversity.
Personal Stories of Triumph
The author shared her own background as the child of a working-class family post-WWII. Her parents lived the unspoken “humiliation of the 1950’s of not making it work, of not being up to the American spirit.” As a seventh grader, an unkempt, ill-dressed Ms. Noonan was taken aside by a counselor, who told her that if she “cleaned up,” she could become a clerk.
A local resident also shared a similar story of overcoming adversity. The resident’s high school counselor told them they couldn’t transfer to a magnet technical high school. However, with the help of their parents, they were able to secure a transfer and pursue their dreams.
These stories highlight the importance of perseverance and determination in overcoming obstacles. They also demonstrate the value of supportive relationships and community in helping individuals achieve their goals.
