Oshkosh North High School auditorium remodel bids exceed $5 million budget estimate

Oshkosh, Wis. – The Oshkosh North High School board is confronting a significant cost gap in the planned renovation of the school’s auditorium. Initial estimates placed the project at $18 million, but recent contractor bids have come in roughly $5 million over that figure.

Board members voice concern

Board member Barbara Herzog told the public meeting that the bids “went well over the estimated $18‑million price tag,” underscoring the need for a transparent review of the scope and financing. “We have a responsibility to our taxpayers and families to keep this project fiscally responsible,” Herzog added.

Administration seeks solutions

Assistant Superintendent of Operations Brian Yerkey said the district is already evaluating ways to reduce the cost burden. “We are looking at value‑engineered alternatives, phasing certain elements, and re‑negotiating terms with potential contractors,” Yerkey explained. He emphasized that the district remains committed to delivering a modern, safe auditorium for students and the community.

Parallel school construction costs rising

In addition to the auditorium issue, the district’s plans for a new west‑side consolidated middle school are also seeing budget pressure. Current estimates indicate the project is about $1 million above the original budget, a figure that mirrors broader construction cost trends across Wisconsin.

District officials attribute the increase to higher material prices and labor shortages that have affected many public‑sector projects statewide. “These are market forces beyond our control, but we will continue to seek the most responsible use of public funds,” Yerkey said.

Community response

Parents and local residents expressed mixed reactions at the meeting. Some praised the board’s openness about the financial challenges, while others urged the district to consider scaling back non‑essential features. “Our children deserve a quality learning environment, but we also need to be good stewards of our community’s resources,” said local parent Mark Daniels.

Next steps

The board has scheduled a follow‑up session next month to review revised cost proposals and determine whether to adjust the project scope, seek additional funding, or explore alternative financing options. Stakeholders are encouraged to submit written comments before the deadline.
