Oregon Ducks travel to Los Angeles to face USC in high‑stakes West Coast clash

Saturday’s showdown at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum pits the Oregon Ducks against the USC Trojans in a game that highlights how far Oregon’s recruiting has come since the days when the program relied heavily on California talent. The Ducks, now ranked No. 20, will look to extend their 2‑0 record against USC in the Dan Lanning/Lincoln Riley era.

Recruiting roots and new horizons

Under former head coach Mario Cristobal, Oregon made a concerted effort to recruit in California, a strategy that paid off in 2019 when the Ducks routed USC 56‑24 at the Coliseum. That year, California stand‑outs Mycah Pittman and Mykael Wright helped secure the win, and the team went on to capture the Rose Bowl.

Seven years later, the Ducks still feature several California products, including defensive lineman Matayo Uiagalelei, running back Jordon Davison and linebacker Jerry Mixon. Yet the roster now reflects a truly national footprint. Quarterback Dante Moore hails from Detroit, wide receiver Dakorien Moore is from Duncanville, Texas, and freshman receiver Messiah Hampton comes from Rochester, N.Y.

Coaching perspectives

“Coming from Southern California, the two schools you think of staying on the West Coast are definitely Oregon and USC,” Uiagalelei said. “At Oregon it doesn’t matter where you’re from if Coach Lanning thinks you can play.” Head coach Dan Lanning echoed that sentiment, noting the program’s recruiting footprint now reaches “nearly every corner of the country.”

Lanning also praised USC quarterback Jayden Maiava, saying, “He puts the ball in places where defenders have to fight for a play. He can extend plays with his feet and keep his eyes downfield.” Maiava, a redshirt senior, has completed 75.7% of his passes for 1,173 yards, 12 touchdowns and only one interception through four games.

Statistical match‑up

Oregon’s pass rush, once a hallmark of the program, ranks 11th in the Big Ten with 1.67 sacks per game, a figure bolstered by two sacks against Portland State. Uiagalelei recorded one of those, but his production has dipped since a breakout 2024 season that yielded 10.5 sacks.

USC’s recruiting class this year is ranked No. 1 nationally and includes 20 California players out of 35 signees, a stark contrast to the five Californians in the Trojans’ 2025 class. The Trojans are clearly aiming to re‑establish California as their recruiting advantage.

Oregon enters the game with a 2‑1 record (0‑0 in the Big Ten), while USC is 4‑0 (1‑0 in the Big Ten) after a 9‑4 season in 2025.

What to watch

Key players for Oregon include defensive lineman Matayo Uiagalelei, who posted seven tackles, two for loss, a sack and a forced fumble against USC last season. For USC, quarterback Jayden Maiava’s ability to extend plays and make accurate throws will be a focal point.

Both coaches expect a hard‑fought contest. Lanning emphasized the need for the Ducks’ defense to “get after the quarterback,” while USC hopes its revamped recruiting class can translate talent into on‑field success.

Local relevance

For fans in Eugene and the surrounding region, the game offers a chance to see how Oregon’s national recruiting strategy stacks up against a traditional West Coast power. The matchup also provides a glimpse into how the Ducks’ evolving roster composition may shape future contests against regional rivals.
