Oregon DOJ launches “Open Door to Government” portal for residents

Bend, Oregon – The Oregon Department of Justice announced a new online resource called “Open Door to Government.” The portal is designed to make state government more transparent and accessible for all Oregonians, giving them direct guidance on how to interact with public agencies.

What the portal provides

The site bundles several toolkits that break down complex legal processes into plain language. The “Oregon DOJ and Me” toolkit explains the role of the Attorney General, outlines agency functions and answers common questions. A separate Public Records Toolkit lets users submit records requests, view the status of existing requests and read official responses under Oregon’s public records law.

For citizens who attend local government meetings, the Public Meetings Toolkit outlines legal compliance obligations for governing bodies and offers step‑by‑step guidance on how residents can monitor and participate in those meetings. The Attorney General Opinions section publishes formal legal positions taken by the state, with context that shows how those opinions affect everyday life.

Appointments and rulemaking made clearer

The portal also includes an Attorney General Appointments section. It lists advisory committees, task forces, councils and commissions that receive appointments from the Attorney General and provides instructions for public involvement in those processes.

In the Rules and Rulemaking area, users can find definitions of regulatory terms, view proposed regulations and read recently adopted administrative policies. The Department says this will help Oregonians understand how new rules are created and how they can comment during the rulemaking process.

Attorney General Dan Rayfield’s vision

Attorney General Dan Rayfield said the initiative is about “making sure Oregonians don’t have to be lawyers or insiders to understand their rights, ask a question, or get an answer.” He added, “Government only works for people if they can find their way into it. We’re opening the door wider and we’re committed to continuously expanding and improving these resources.”

The DOJ plans to add more tools in the coming months, further expanding the portal’s reach and utility. By providing clear, centralized information, the state hopes to empower citizens, reduce reliance on costly legal counsel and foster greater civic engagement across Oregon.

Why this matters locally

For residents of Bend and the surrounding Deschutes County area, the portal offers a practical way to engage with state government without traveling to Salem or navigating dense legal texts. Community groups, small businesses and families can use the resources to file records requests, attend public meetings and understand how state rules may affect local projects.

Local leaders have welcomed the effort, noting that greater transparency can build trust between citizens and government. As Oregon continues to grapple with issues ranging from water management to education funding, tools that simplify the bureaucratic process are likely to be valuable assets for informed participation.

The “Open Door to Government” portal is now live at www.oregon.gov/justice/online-resources. The Department encourages all Oregonians to explore the site and provide feedback as it evolves.
