OpenAI introduces ChatGPT for Teens with added safety and parental controls

OpenAI announced Tuesday that it is rolling out a dedicated version of its ChatGPT chatbot for teenagers, defined as users between 13 and 17 years old. The company says the teen‑focused model includes stronger safeguards designed to keep minors from encountering material related to suicide, self‑harm, or romantic and sexual topics.

Safety features and content limits

According to OpenAI, the teen chatbot will not suggest that it has personal feelings, claim consciousness, or engage in any romantic or sexual conversation. It also blocks instructions that could facilitate drug use, disordered eating, or self‑injury. The system relies on an age‑assurance algorithm that estimates a user’s age from the nature of their queries; if a user is identified as a minor, they are automatically routed to the teen version.

Parental‑control options

While the platform does not require parental verification, OpenAI offers an opt‑in parental‑control feature. Both the teen and a parent or guardian must enable the setting, after which parents can set “quiet hours” that limit access and receive safety notifications in high‑risk situations, such as potential self‑harm. OpenAI says these alerts focus on moments when offline support may be most needed.

Homework assistance designed for learning

The teen edition is also intended to support education without simply providing ready‑made answers. OpenAI states the chatbot will guide students toward developing their own solutions, encouraging active engagement with the material. This approach aligns with the company’s broader push to expand interactive learning tools, which it believes improve retention and critical thinking.

Context and concerns

Parents, educators and child‑development experts have long warned about the risks of unrestricted AI use by minors, citing incidents of cheating, emotional overreliance and exposure to harmful content. A 2025 study by Common Sense Media found that more than 70% of teens use AI chatbots for companionship, and half do so regularly. OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman has described “emotional overreliance” on AI as a common issue among young people.

OpenAI’s head of child development, Allison Mishkin, explained that the company identified cues that could lead a teen to form an unhealthy attachment to the chatbot and removed them. The firm also highlighted that the teen model will still provide useful assistance for research, brainstorming and study planning, while avoiding the provision of full essay drafts.

Industry comparison

The rollout mirrors steps taken by other tech firms, such as Meta’s teen‑only Instagram accounts, which impose stricter content, chat and privacy rules. OpenAI’s move represents its first major product aimed specifically at the generation that is growing up alongside artificial‑intelligence technology.

OpenAI says the teen version will be available globally, though the company notes that local regulations may affect how parental controls are implemented in different jurisdictions.
