Open House Chicago Returns Oct. 17‑18 with 200+ Sites and 20 New Locations

Chicago’s beloved Open House festival is back for its 16th edition, scheduled for the weekend of Oct. 17‑18. Organized by the Chicago Architecture Center, the event will open more than 200 historic, architectural and cultural sites to the public at no cost.

What to Expect

Visitors can simply show up—no advance registration is required—and wander among rooftops, breweries, distilleries, houses of worship, greenspaces and other rarely accessible locations. The Center estimates the festival draws over 35,000 guests from across the country each year, providing a unique chance to explore the city’s built heritage.

New Sites Highlighted

This year adds 20 brand‑new locations, among them the Chicago Fire FC’s Dear Chicago Experience Center in Streeterville, the Muddy Waters MOJO Museum housed in the blues legend’s restored Kenwood residence, a vinyl‑LP pressing plant in the former Hammond Organ factory in Hermosa, and the Women’s Athletic Club on the Near North Side—the nation’s first athletic club for women.

Returning Favorites

Long‑standing Open House stops return, including the Jazz Age Park Castle Condominiums in Rogers Park, Al‑Sadiq Mosque in Bronzeville, Chicago Magic Lounge in Andersonville, Apollo’s 2000 in Little Village, Adler & Sullivan’s 1889 Auditorium Theater in the Loop, Avalon Regal Theater in South Shore, and the Walt Disney House and Birthplace in Hermosa.

Built on Belief Initiative

The festival also launches a new “Built on Belief” program that examines the intersection of architecture, religion and spirituality. Three sites in Woodlawn will co‑create exhibitions and programs that tell how the South Side neighborhood has been shaped by diverse faith communities and sacred places over generations.

Why It Matters

“Open House Chicago is a chance to discover our city’s historic and contemporary architecture with an unprecedented level of access,” said Eleanor Esser Gorski, president and CEO of the Chicago Architecture Center. “We hope attendees strengthen their relationships with architectural spaces in their own neighborhoods while also exploring diverse communities across the city and gaining confidence to participate more fully in conversations around architecture, design and civic life.”

The Chicago Architecture Center is also celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, underscoring its long‑standing role in promoting public appreciation of the city’s built environment.

Plan Your Visit

Open House runs Oct. 17‑18, with each site operating during designated Open House hours. Detailed site listings, maps and suggested itineraries are available on the Chicago Architecture Center’s website. Whether you’re a lifelong Chicagoan or a first‑time visitor, the festival offers a rare opportunity to step inside the city’s most iconic—and often hidden—spaces.
