Opaline Bar & Brasserie Brings Paris to Adams Morgan

What does a proper French brasserie look like when it lands in Adams Morgan, one of Washington’s most reliably chaotic neighborhoods? At Opaline Bar & Brasserie on Columbia Road, the answer is: quieter than expected, and considerably more serious about the food.

Opaline opened inside the Cambria Hotel a few years back, and the room itself does most of the early convincing. Tall ceilings, warm amber light, a long curved bar that invites lingering — it reads less like a hotel restaurant trying hard and more like a place that simply knows what it is. The crowd on any given weeknight skews local: people who live nearby and have figured out that the kitchen doesn’t cut corners.

The menu leans classic French with enough restraint to avoid parody. Steak frites arrives with a properly rested piece of beef and fries that stay crisp through the meal — no small accomplishment. The moules marinières are textbook: briny, fragrant, the broth worth soaking bread into long after the mussels are gone. Onion soup gets a dark, deeply reduced stock that takes time to make, and it shows. These are not flashy preparations. They are competent ones, which is rarer in this city than it should be.

The bar program earns its space on the menu. The cocktail list runs toward Parisian classics with small seasonal adjustments — a well-made Aperol spritz, a French 75 that uses good Champagne rather than a cost-cutting substitute. The wine list skews French and stays reasonable, with several bottles under forty dollars that don’t embarrass themselves. The by-the-glass options rotate enough to reward return visits.

Service has a formality to it that stops short of stiffness. Staff know the menu, answer questions directly, and don’t hover. Weekend brunch draws a different crowd — later risers working through eggs Benedict and a carafe of rosé — but the weekday dinner hours are when Opaline operates at its best, when the pace slows and the kitchen has room to work.

Pricing sits in the mid-range for a neighborhood where mid-range has crept upward in recent years. Expect to spend around fifty to seventy dollars per person with wine, closer to forty if you stick to cocktails and a single course. Reservations are easy to get with a few days’ notice, which is not something that can be said about comparable spots in Shaw or Capitol Hill right now.

The location — Adams Morgan, a short walk from the Woodley Park or Columbia Heights Metro stops — puts Opaline within easy reach without requiring a cab. Parking is what Adams Morgan always is: a project. The neighborhood noise stays outside; the dining room itself runs at a volume where conversation doesn’t require effort.

What Opaline doesn’t do is reinvent anything. It doesn’t need to. Washington already has plenty of restaurants chasing novelty. This one is simply committed to doing French brasserie food correctly, in a room built for it, in a part of the city that benefits from having exactly this kind of anchor. That turns out to be enough.
