One dead, two injured in four-vehicle crash on State Route 138 in Highland County

Highland County officials confirmed that a multi‑vehicle collision on State Route 138 resulted in one fatality and two injuries early Sunday evening. Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers arrived at the scene around 8:49 p.m. after receiving reports of a crash involving four vehicles.

Vehicles and drivers involved

According to the preliminary investigation, a 1973 Plymouth Duster and a 2019 Ford Ranger were traveling southwest on the highway. Heading northeast were a 2004 Dodge Dakota and a 2008 Chevrolet Colorado, each driven by 17‑year‑old boys.

The Plymouth Duster crossed left of center, striking both of the northeast‑bound vehicles. The Ford Ranger then collided with the Dodge Dakota. The driver of the Plymouth, identified as 37‑year‑old Daniel Vance of Sardinia, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Injuries and emergency response

The driver of the Ford Ranger and one of the teenage drivers received treatment for minor injuries and were released after evaluation. The other teen passenger sustained non‑life‑threatening injuries and was taken to a local medical facility for further care.

Emergency responders from the Highland County Sheriff’s Office, Paint Creek Fire Department, Lynchburg Fire Department, and the Highland County Coroner’s Office worked together to secure the crash site and provide medical assistance. T&G Towing was called in to remove the damaged vehicles.

Investigation continues

The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Wilmington Post continues to investigate the cause of the crash. Officials have not released details regarding speed, road conditions, or whether alcohol or drugs were factors.

Residents are reminded to exercise caution when traveling on rural highways, especially during evening hours when visibility can be reduced. The Ohio State Highway Patrol encourages drivers to maintain safe following distances, obey speed limits, and avoid distractions.

Community impact

The loss of Daniel Vance has resonated throughout the Sardinia and broader Highland County community. Local churches and civic groups are expected to hold a memorial service in the coming days, offering support to Vance’s family and friends.

Highland County officials will review the incident to determine if additional safety measures, such as improved signage or road maintenance, are warranted on State Route 138.
