One dead, four injured after vehicle strikes pedestrians in Fairfax District parking lot

Los Angeles – A tragic collision in the Fairfax District left one person dead and four others injured on Thursday afternoon. The incident occurred just before 1:30 p.m. in the shared parking lot of a Trader Joe’s grocery store, Mendocino Farms and Sidecar Doughnuts.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the driver, a woman in her 80s, remained at the scene after the crash. Emergency responders arrived quickly, providing first aid and transporting the four surviving victims to nearby hospitals for treatment. The victim who was pronounced dead at the scene was a pedestrian who had been walking near the store entrance.

Police officials have not yet released details about the cause of the crash. A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that no arrests have been made and that the investigation is ongoing.

Community response and safety concerns

Local residents expressed shock and sorrow over the loss of life in a neighborhood known for its bustling retail and dining scene. “We come here every day for groceries and coffee, and it’s heartbreaking to think this could happen in our own parking lot,” said one nearby shopper who asked to remain anonymous.

The Fairfax District has previously been the focus of pedestrian‑safety initiatives, including improved crosswalk signage and speed‑limit enforcement in high‑traffic areas. City officials have urged drivers to exercise caution, especially in areas where pedestrians frequently cross between stores.

Police and fire department statements

Los Angeles Fire Department officials emphasized the swift response of firefighters, who were on the scene within minutes of the 911 call. “Our crews worked diligently to provide immediate medical assistance and secure the area,” a fire department spokesperson said.

The Los Angeles Police Department is reviewing dash‑cam footage and interviewing witnesses to determine whether driver error, vehicle malfunction, or another factor contributed to the collision. “We are treating this as a serious incident and will release further information as it becomes available,” the LAPD spokesperson added.

What residents can do

Authorities encourage anyone who witnessed the crash or has additional information to contact the LAPD non‑emergency line at (877) ASK‑LAPD. They also remind drivers to obey posted speed limits, watch for pedestrians, and avoid distractions while navigating crowded parking areas.

As the community mourns the loss of a life and supports those injured, city officials reaffirm their commitment to improving pedestrian safety throughout Los Angeles.
