Nick Kyrgios receives one‑month suspension after cocaine test in Mallorca

Melbourne – Australian tennis professional Nick Kyrgios has agreed to a one‑month suspension under anti‑doping rules after a positive cocaine test from the ATP tournament in Mallorca, Spain, in June. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced the decision on September 4, noting that Kyrgios entered a treatment programme that allowed the standard three‑month ban to be reduced.

ITIA explanation and treatment programme

The 31‑year‑old player explained to ITIA investigators that his cocaine use happened “socially” during a night out before his scheduled match in Mallorca. An independent scientific expert at a World Anti‑Doping Agency‑accredited laboratory reviewed the sample and confirmed that the level of cocaine detected was consistent with off‑competition use. Consequently, the ITIA accepted that Kyrgios’ drug use occurred outside of competition and granted the reduced sanction.

Consequences and next steps

Kyrgios’ suspension will end on Thursday, provided he completes the approved treatment programme. He will forfeit any prize money and ranking points earned at the Mallorca event. While cocaine remains prohibited in‑competition and typically triggers a provisional suspension, the ITIA’s decision reflects its discretion to consider the circumstances surrounding the violation.

The Australian player previously apologized on social media, describing the incident as a “huge mistake” and taking full responsibility for his actions. The ITIA’s statement underscores its commitment to a fair and transparent anti‑doping process while allowing athletes to address personal issues through approved treatment pathways.
