Omaha honors WWII veteran Cpl. Robert Clark Pierce with dignified transfer

On Tuesday morning, Omaha residents gathered at Braman Mortuary for a dignified transfer honoring Cpl. Robert Clark Pierce, a World War II serviceman whose remains were recovered after more than eight decades.

From the Pacific to Omaha

Pierce served with the 7th Materiel Squadron and the 5th Air Base Group. In 1942, Japanese forces captured him during the early Pacific campaign. He spent nine months as a prisoner of war in the Philippines before succumbing to the harsh conditions of the camp in November of that year at the age of 28.

His remains were discovered in January 2026 during a routine search of a former POW site. After identification by the prisoner‑of‑war accounting agency, the Army arranged for his return to his hometown.

Family and community pay tribute

Family members stood beside the casket as it arrived at the mortuary. Tim Book, the son of Pierce’s oldest living relative, spoke on behalf of the family. “It means a great deal to us. The Army went through the dedication of our citizens. They have brought him home and finally laid him to rest,” Book said, noting that none of the living attendees were even born when Pierce first enlisted.

Patriot Guard riders formed an honor and flag line, a tradition that underscores the nation’s gratitude for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. The ceremony reflected Omaha’s deep respect for military service and the enduring bonds of faith and family that sustain our community.

Remembering a missing hero

In addition to the local ceremony, Pierce’s name is inscribed on the Walls of the Missing at an American cemetery in the Philippines, ensuring his sacrifice is remembered both at home and abroad.

The event serves as a reminder of the countless service members who never returned home and the importance of honoring their memory. Omaha’s veterans organizations, churches, and civic groups joined together, embodying the city’s commitment to preserving the legacy of those who defended liberty.

Continuing the legacy

Local leaders praised the Army’s dedication to bringing home missing soldiers, emphasizing that such efforts reinforce the nation’s promise to its heroes and their families. The ceremony also highlighted the role of community volunteers and faith‑based groups in supporting veterans and their loved ones.

As Omaha reflects on this solemn occasion, the story of Cpl. Pierce stands as a testament to the enduring values of sacrifice, faith, and family that define our city and our nation.
