Olympic champion Alysa Liu announces season break, vows return for 2027-28

Olympic champion Alysa Liu, the 21‑year‑old who captured the women’s singles gold medal at the Milan‑Cortina Games, announced Tuesday that she will miss the 2026‑27 figure‑skating season. In an Instagram post, Liu explained she needs time to “recalibrate, fine‑tune things & whatnot” and to pursue personal growth beyond the ice.

Reason for the pause

“I always want to challenge myself in new ways, so my artistry & skating can evolve,” Liu wrote. She stressed that the decision is not a retirement; instead, she intends to return for the 2027‑28 competitive season. “Fear not, I’ll be back,” she added, reassuring fans and sponsors.

Recent achievements

Liu made history at the February 2026 Olympics, becoming the first American woman to win the Olympic title since Sarah Hughes in 2002. After the Games, she did not compete at the World Championships in March, marking the first time she missed a major international event since her breakout season.

Earlier in her career, Liu became the youngest women’s national champion at age 13. She briefly retired at 16, citing a lack of control over her own life. After a period away from the sport, she returned on her own terms, training for just seven months before winning the 2025 World Figure Skating Championships.

Impact on the sport

Liu’s pause comes at a pivotal moment for U.S. figure skating, which has seen a resurgence of young talent. Her decision to step back for personal development underscores the pressures elite athletes face and highlights the importance of mental and emotional well‑being alongside physical training.

Fans and fellow skaters have expressed support for Liu’s choice, noting that a refreshed athlete often returns stronger and more creative. Coaches anticipate that her time away will allow her to explore new choreography and technical elements, potentially raising the artistic standard of future competitions.

Looking ahead

While Liu will not appear in the upcoming season’s Grand Prix events or national championships, the skating community will be watching for any updates on her training regimen. Her planned return for the 2027‑28 season positions her as a likely contender for the next Olympic cycle, keeping American hopes high for continued international success.

Until then, Liu encourages young skaters to focus on personal growth and to remember that success is a marathon, not a sprint. “Take the time you need,” she wrote, “and come back stronger.”
