Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana to receive over $970 million from Meta settlement

The Trump administration’s ongoing effort to protect families from harmful online content received a major boost this week when a $16.6 billion settlement with Meta was announced. The agreement, reached by 29 state attorneys general, requires Meta to impose daily time limits for teen users, strengthen age verification, and provide robust parental‑control options for a decade.

State allocations

Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson said the state is slated to receive more than $319 million over the next ten years. Wilson called the deal “historic,” emphasizing that digital platforms have a duty to shield impressionable minds from unchecked exposure.

Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita announced a guaranteed payment of $296 million, with the possibility of rising to $419.4 million. Rokita framed the settlement as a “milestone victory for Hoosier families,” noting that Meta had previously prioritized engagement and profit over the mental health of children. The funds will help Indiana address documented harms to youth and support families through additional resources and collaborative protections with other states.

Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman disclosed that the Commonwealth will receive $358 million. Coleman stressed that the settlement is about more than money; it is about giving Kentucky children a childhood not measured in likes and followers. The new online safeguards are expected to bring a generational shift toward safer social‑media experiences for families.

What the settlement means for parents

Under the agreement, Meta must implement tools that allow parents to opt their teens out of algorithm‑driven scrolling designed to keep users hooked. Age‑appropriate content controls and a ten‑year commitment to these protections aim to reduce the mental‑health risks associated with excessive social‑media use.

State officials highlighted that the settlement funds will be used to bolster existing mental‑health programs, expand parental‑education initiatives, and partner with other states to create consistent safeguards across the region.

Broader impact

The settlement reflects a growing consensus among state leaders that unchecked social‑media platforms pose a real threat to the well‑being of children and families. By securing both financial resources and concrete platform changes, Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana are positioning themselves as leaders in the fight to protect the next generation.

While the settlement does not end all concerns about online safety, it represents a significant step toward aligning powerful tech companies with the values of family, faith and individual liberty that many communities hold dear.
