ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A former Olympic bronze medalist has arrived in Albuquerque with the goal of giving back to the sport that played a central role in her life.
Courtney Hurley’s résumé is extensive: she’s a three-time Olympian, won an individual bronze at the 2012 London Games, is a world champion and also took home a world championship bronze.
In 2018 Hurley captured an individual bronze at the World Fencing Championships and was a key contributor when her team secured gold that same year.
A Texas native, Hurley assumed leadership of Duke City Fencing in Albuquerque this month and plans to expand interest and participation in fencing across New Mexico.
“Fencing isn’t widespread here yet. This is the largest club in the state, and I believe there’s room for it to grow much more,” she said.
Members of Duke City Fencing appreciate having such an accomplished athlete leading the program. Students Zoe and Jackson say training with Hurley has been exciting.
“I never imagined I’d be coached by an Olympian — it’s unbelievable,” Zoe said.
“She’s a real inspiration and shows you it’s possible to reach high levels of success,” Jackson added.
