Olive ridley sea turtle nests on Seal Beach and Huntington Beach – first West Coast record

In an unprecedented wildlife event, a female olive ridley sea turtle nested on the sands of Seal Beach, Orange County, on Wednesday, and returned to lay a second clutch just miles south in Huntington Beach a few days later. Both sites are now under protective fencing and signage as crews from NOAA Fisheries and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife monitor the eggs.

Local officials respond quickly

Trevor McDonald, chief of the Huntington Beach Marine Safety Division, explained that lifeguards initially responded to a report of an injured turtle. “When we arrived, we realized the turtle was not injured and, in fact, it was nesting,” he said. The rapid response helped ensure the turtle could complete its natural behavior without disturbance.

Why this matters

NOAA Fisheries West Coast confirmed via a social‑media post that this is the first‑ever recorded natural nesting for any sea‑turtle species on the U.S. West Coast. Historically, olive ridley turtles nest on the southern tip of Baja California in Mexico, making these California sightings a remarkable shift.

Possible causes

Chad Steffen, a fisherman and certified marine naturalist, linked the unusual nesting to the strong El Niño winter currently warming Pacific waters. “The temperatures where their normal nesting sites exist may be a little bit too high, being a super strong El Niño,” he said, noting that unusually warm water is also being observed farther south in Mexico.

Protection and monitoring

Both NOAA and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife have installed protective fencing and large signs to keep the public away from the delicate eggs. “It’s federally protected, and it’s something that is exciting for us to be able to be a part of and witness,” McDonald added, urging residents to respect the caution tape.

Biologists plan to monitor the nests throughout the incubation period, which can last up to 60 days. While it is unclear when the eggs will hatch, the teams are prepared to document the hatchlings and ensure their safe journey to the ocean.

Community impact

The event has drawn attention from local schools, environmental groups, and beach‑goers, offering a unique educational opportunity about marine conservation and the effects of climate patterns on wildlife. Residents are encouraged to observe from a distance and support the protective measures put in place.
