Ole Miss community mourns two students as officials investigate deaths linked to kratom

Oxford, Miss. – The University of Mississippi campus is grieving after two students were discovered deceased in separate residences on Monday. While authorities have not confirmed a cause of death, packaged kratom – an over‑the‑counter herbal supplement with opioid‑like effects – was found in both investigations.

University response and student support

Olivia Claire Williford, president of the university’s Associated Student Body, said the tragedy has sparked conversations about looking after one another. “I have also seen tremendous compassion, kindness, and support throughout our community,” she wrote in an email, adding that the student body remains united during this difficult time.

Dr. Shawnboda Mead, the university’s vice chancellor for student affairs, expressed the institution’s sorrow on X, extending condolences to families, friends, and loved ones.

Law enforcement and public‑health warnings

Local law enforcement, including the Lafayette County Metro Narcotics unit, is working with state investigators. The Lafayette County coroner’s office confirmed the two deaths but has not released names, ages, or genders.

Officials have urged residents to avoid kratom and any medication or substance not prescribed or obtained from a trusted, regulated source. Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves highlighted the broader issue of illegal drugs on college campuses, urging parents to discuss the dangers with their children.

State initiatives on drug safety

Mississippi is in the third year of its “One Pill Can Kill” initiative, aimed at reducing overdose deaths, including those involving fentanyl. Recently, the state attorney general trained Ole Miss students on how to administer Narcan, an over‑the‑counter nasal spray that can reverse opioid overdoses.

While kratom is not illegal in Mississippi, Lafayette County banned its sale, possession, and distribution in 2021. The federal government has also taken steps to regulate potent kratom‑related compounds due to concerns about addiction and poisoning.

Community reaction

Fraternities, sororities, and student groups have placed black ribbons on campus housing to honor the deceased. The university and local community continue to offer support services as investigations proceed.
