Weatherford officials are sharing lessons from last year’s anhydrous ammonia leak, hoping to help other emergency responders prepare for large-scale emergencies. The leak, which occurred in November, injured over 70 people and prompted a large-scale response from emergency services.
Lessons Learned
Emergency managers who responded to the leak used the lessons they learned from the event to lead an informational meeting in nearby Grady County. Mike Karlin, the Weatherford emergency manager, said the goal is to help somebody in the future by sharing their perspective on what exactly happened during the leak.
The first challenge was getting people to safety, with the local hospital becoming overwhelmed. Karlin said the initial hour and a half were very chaotic, but discussing what they did to overcome that is crucial for future responses.
