Oklahoma leaders are reacting to two landmark decisions from the US Supreme Court. The Court upheld birthright citizenship, ruling that babies born on American soil are automatically citizens, regardless of their parents’ immigration status. Additionally, the Court ruled that states can keep their bans on transgender athletes participating in women’s sports.
Birthright Citizenship Ruling
The Supreme Court’s decision on birthright citizenship maintains over a century of legal precedent in America. Governor Kevin Stitt and other Oklahoma leaders have expressed their opinions on the ruling. Senator James Lankford stated that Americans are proud of their country and committed to upholding its laws, but he does not agree with the 6-3 decision to give American citizenship to individuals whose families intentionally violated the law.
Transgender Athletes in School Sports Ruling
The Supreme Court also ruled that states can exclude transgender athletes from women’s and girls’ sports. Oklahoma is one of two dozen Republican-led states that have adopted bans on female transgender athletes competing in school sports. Governor Stitt celebrated the ruling, saying it upholds a common-sense law and protects girls in the locker room and on the playing field.
Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond also released a statement, appreciating the court’s decision and vowing to continue defending and enforcing commonsense laws that preserve competitive fairness in female sports.
