Oklahoma GOP governor hopefuls propose literacy and early‑childhood plans to boost state education ranking

Oklahoma’s education ranking sits at 50th on the WalletHub list, a statistic that both Republican gubernatorial candidates cited as a call to action. Mike Mazzei and Attorney General Gentner Drummond each presented specific plans they say will improve reading scores and overall school performance.

Mazzei’s literacy‑focused strategy

Mazzei called the current ranking “unacceptable” and pledged to hire a statewide literacy director in the first week of his administration. He said the director will model the Mississippi approach that moved that state from 50th to first in reading outcomes. Mazzei referenced a meeting with Mississippi literacy director Amanda Malone to identify three critical success factors.

His proposal replaces the existing curriculum with a phonics‑based system that teaches children how letters and letter combinations correspond to sounds, enabling them to decode unfamiliar words. Mazzei also called for increased support for teachers, including more coaches, specialists, and regional coordinators to assist reading teachers across Oklahoma’s 500‑plus school districts.

Some of the groundwork is already in place. A new state law requires earlier screening and reading intervention, and starting in 2027, third‑graders who score below basic and lack an exemption could be retained.

Drummond’s early‑childhood and reading specialist plan

Drummond emphasized the importance of the years before kindergarten. He noted that 60% of Oklahoma’s children ages zero to five lack proper nutrition, stimulation, and discipline. To address this, he proposes expanding access to quality daycare, arguing that the brain develops 60% of its capacity by age five.

His education blueprint includes funding a reading specialist for every school district, with the goal of bringing all students to reading competency by third grade. Drummond also stressed the need to maintain focus on middle and high school, particularly career‑technical education, stating that “not every child needs to go to the university.”

Both candidates framed their proposals as ways to give families the tools they need for their children’s success, aligning with broader parental‑rights concerns about early education and literacy standards.

What the proposals mean for voters

As the primary season progresses, Oklahoma voters will weigh these education plans against other issues such as the state’s economy, public safety, and infrastructure. The candidates’ focus on literacy and early childhood care reflects a growing recognition that strong foundational skills are essential for long‑term economic competitiveness.

While the proposals differ in emphasis—Mazzei on statewide curriculum overhaul and teacher support, Drummond on early childhood services and district‑wide reading specialists—both aim to move Oklahoma out of the bottom tier of national education rankings.

Voters interested in the education component of the race can compare the candidates’ detailed platforms on their campaign websites or attend upcoming town halls where the proposals will be discussed further.
