Oklahoma filmmaker Allex Tarr is showcasing her Oklahoma-inspired short film, ‘Exit Strategy,’ at the deadCenter Film Festival this weekend. Tarr, who grew up in Shawnee and Moore, said her Oklahoma roots inspire all of her work.
Local Inspiration
‘I grew up in Shawnee and Moore. I went to Westmoore for high school. I went to UCO in Edmond,’ Tarr said. Although she now lives in Los Angeles, Tarr said her family and friends from Oklahoma all helped on the film, so they all get to come to the premiere and be part of this experience with her.
The short film was shot at a bar in Los Angeles that reminded Tarr of Oklahoma. She described it as a personal project inspired by her own experiences. ‘It’s a meta exploration of wanting to be a filmmaker, what it’s like to be a young woman with ambition in the world, and all the good, bad, and ugly that comes with that,’ Tarr said.
Tarr added that ‘Exit Strategy’ is a concept for a longer film she hopes to create under the same name, with plans to film it in Oklahoma. ‘Those are my roots. It’s what I know and love. I always write about it, and I love making films about Oklahoma. I’m excited to keep doing that,’ Tarr said.
‘Exit Strategy’ will be playing again Saturday night at 6 p.m. as part of the festival.
