Oklahoma endures record‑hot September as wildfires blaze across the state

Oklahoma is enduring an unprecedented heat wave this September, the hottest on record for the month, and the conditions are driving a surge in wildfire activity across the state. The combination of soaring temperatures, record‑low rainfall and dry vegetation has created a feedback loop that intensifies both heat and fire risk.

Key fires burning now

The Gracemont Fire in Caddo County has been active for about four days and has already consumed more than 3,000 acres. Firefighters reported a highly active afternoon on Tuesday, prompting one of the largest aerial firefighting responses of the year. In Washita County, the Calvary Creek Fire continues to spread, while a new blaze near the town of Jones has been linked to the same late‑summer heat wave.

Historic heat and drought statistics

According to data from the Oklahoma Mesonet, this period marks the second driest late summer on record for the state, surpassed only by the 1936 Dust Bowl year. Over the past 60 days, rainfall has been scarce, and August was the second‑hottest on record. September has now set a new record for the most triple‑digit temperature days, with 13 days above 100°F, nearly double the previous high of seven days set in 2000. Oklahoma City is tied for third place nationally for the most 100‑degree days in a single year, with 45 such days recorded so far.

Expert perspective

“Heat and drought, it’s a feedback loop. The drier you are, the hotter you get, and vice versa,” said KOCO 5 meteorologist Joseph Neubauer. He added that a forecasted rain event next week could help break the cycle and bring cooler air to the region, offering some relief to firefighters and residents alike.

Impact on communities and response efforts

Local emergency management agencies have been on high alert, coordinating ground crews, air tankers, and volunteer firefighters to contain the blazes. Residents in affected counties have been urged to stay informed about evacuation orders and to follow safety guidelines, especially as the fire danger remains elevated across the state.

The ongoing fires underscore the importance of preparedness and community cooperation during extreme weather events. While the immediate threat is being addressed, officials warn that continued dry conditions could prolong the wildfire season, making vigilance essential for the weeks ahead.
