Oklahoma County commissioners reject sheriff’s ICE training proposal

During a regularly scheduled Oklahoma County Commission meeting, commissioners declined to move forward on a proposal from Sheriff Tommie Johnson III’s office that would allow deputies to use resources from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The motion was never brought to a vote, and the decision was met with applause from the public audience.

Commissioners cite language and legal concerns

Commissioner Kevin Lowe said he abstained because the agenda item’s wording was unclear. Interim Commissioner Paul Foster changed his mind after public comment, also pointing to the language of the proposal as a problem. Commissioner Brian Maughan highlighted a pending lawsuit between the sheriff’s office and the county as a reason to hold off on any action.

Sheriff defends the request

Sheriff Johnson explained that the plan does not create a new task force or import a model used elsewhere. “This isn’t a task force, this isn’t any of those models that’s been practiced across the country,” he said. “It just gives our deputies and investigators resources to help them do their job.” He emphasized that ICE agents would not be stationed in the sheriff’s office; the training would simply provide access to existing ICE tools.

Public and community response

Residents voiced strong opposition during the meeting. State Rep. Sam Wargin Grimaldo (House District 92) stated, “We haven’t had it; we don’t need it.” Mark Faulk of the People’s Council for Justice Reform added, “We have been racially profiling people across this country, stripping them of their rights.” The comments reflected broader community concerns about immigration enforcement and civil liberties.

Sheriff’s next steps

After the commission’s inaction, Sheriff Johnson expressed frustration, noting that law‑enforcement decisions are best left to professionals rather than elected officials without direct public‑safety responsibilities. He said he does not plan to reintroduce the proposal and will instead focus on other public‑safety initiatives.

Implications for county governance

The episode underscores the delicate balance county officials must strike between supporting law‑enforcement resources and respecting community sentiment, especially when legal disputes are pending. By rejecting the proposal without a formal vote, the commissioners signaled a cautious approach to any policy that could deepen tensions or raise constitutional questions about immigration enforcement at the local level.
