Oklahoma County Commissioners Call for State Audit After $14 Million Bookkeeping Mistake

Oklahoma County officials are pressing for a state‑level audit after a $14 million bookkeeping mistake was uncovered earlier this year. The error, which affected the county’s reserve fund balance, has prompted commissioners to seek an independent review by State Auditor Cindy Byrd.

Commissioners outline concerns

Commissioner Paul Foster said the investigation began when questions arose about a possible embezzlement case involving a clerk’s office employee. He added that the county has experienced “continued budget errors and fund‑balance corrections,” which he believes warrant a thorough audit.

“We owe it to the citizens of Oklahoma County to have an accurate accounting and reconciliation of all county funding,” Foster said, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability.

Clerk supports independent review

County Clerk Maressa Treat echoed the call for an audit, noting that the mistake stemmed from “errors in how information was entered and reported.” She argued that taxpayers deserve systems that catch such mistakes before they affect the public purse.

“Right now, Oklahoma County has multiple offices operating through different financial systems and processes, and that makes effective county‑wide checks and balances nearly impossible,” Treat said.

Disagreement on the difficulty of the task

While Treat described the situation as “nearly impossible,” Foster pushed back, pointing out that the county has successfully balanced and reconciled budgets in past years despite using varied systems.

“It is by no means nearly impossible. Different people have been able to balance and reconcile yearly budgets in the past despite not having a uniform system to do so,” he said.

Next steps

Commissioner Brian Maughan announced that the County Commission will hold a special meeting on Friday morning. The agenda is expected to include language that would formally request the State Auditor’s services.

“The County Commission will call for a special meeting on Friday morning where agenda items could be placed to allow for the wording to enlist the services of the State Auditor,” Maughan said.

Why the audit matters

An independent audit could provide a clear picture of the county’s financial health, identify any systemic weaknesses, and restore public confidence. It also aligns with the county’s responsibility to safeguard taxpayer dollars and ensure that public funds are managed responsibly.

Local residents have expressed concern that the error reduced the county’s reserve fund by roughly $10 million, a figure that could impact future projects and services. By seeking a state audit, officials hope to correct the record, prevent future discrepancies, and demonstrate fiscal stewardship.

Community response

Citizens and local business owners have voiced support for the audit, noting that transparent financial practices are essential for maintaining trust in county government. As the special meeting approaches, the commission’s decision will be closely watched by stakeholders who rely on accurate budgeting for community services, infrastructure, and public safety.
