Oklahoma City Sober Living Facility Plan Sparks Community Concerns

Jesus House, a nonprofit focused on recovery, is working to expand its mission by converting a privately owned hotel along Classen Boulevard in Oklahoma City into a sober living facility. The move has sparked both support and opposition from the community.

Community Concerns

Some community members have expressed concerns about the location, citing the area’s nightlife and potential contradictions with the goals of a sober living facility. Amy Lucas, who opposes the relocation, stated that while Jesus House is a wonderful program, the area is not suited for it due to the presence of nightlife and establishments like Edna’s.

Christine North, president of Jesus House, acknowledged the concerns but emphasized the benefits of the location, including its proximity to bus routes and job opportunities for residents. North also highlighted that all residents will undergo background checks and cannot have a violent history or be registered sex offenders.

Next Steps

The proposal still requires approval from the Oklahoma City Council, with a meeting scheduled for September 15. Jesus House will stop meal services this Friday to downsize and focus on its recovery mission. The Oklahoma City Planning Commission approved the zoning request for the new facility earlier this month.
