Okeechobee County has taken a significant step in enhancing emergency response by launching a text-to-911 service. This new feature is part of the county’s E-911 system, offering residents and visitors a vital alternative for contacting emergency services when making a phone call is not feasible or safe.
Benefits of Text-to-911
According to county officials, the text-to-911 service is particularly beneficial in situations such as domestic violence, medical emergencies, and active threats. It also serves individuals with hearing or speech impairments, providing them a reliable way to reach out for help.
Justin Hazellief, the public safety director and fire chief, emphasized the importance of this service, stating, “We can continue to offer a reliable, trustworthy service that gives the people in the community a different way to contact 911. Not everyone is able to make voice 911 calls.”
Rural Area Considerations
The service is also expected to be advantageous in the rural areas of Okeechobee County, where phone signals might not support a voice call but can still send a text message. Hazellief noted, “In a rural area, there may not be the best phone signal where you can complete a good phone call.”
County officials explained that text messages sent to 911 go directly to dispatchers, just like a phone call. In these situations, individuals are advised to briefly describe the emergency and respond to dispatcher questions as quickly as possible.
Community Awareness
While the text-to-911 service is a valuable tool, officials stressed that calling 911 remains the fastest option when it is safe to do so. Hazellief highlighted the importance of community awareness, saying, “If you don’t know that you have a service, you’re not gonna be able to use it.”
