Oklahoma City – The OKCPS Foundation hosted a Coat‑a‑Kid event at Kaiser Elementary School on Friday morning, distributing brand‑new winter coats to students who might otherwise face a cold‑weather barrier to attending class.
Removing Barriers to Learning
“Coat‑a‑Kid is a program that helps remove barriers to learning that equips kids with what they need to succeed,” said Kendra Horn, president of the OKCPS Foundation. Horn explained that a simple coat can be the difference between a child staying in the classroom and missing school when temperatures fall below freezing.
Community Volunteers Join the Effort
Volunteers from local organizations shopped alongside the children, allowing each student to pick out a coat that fit their style and size. “It’s just so cool to see them thrive and leave with something they chose, something they own,” said Laura Aufleger, president of OnCue, a volunteer partner. “It’s more than a simple coat; it’s a boost to their confidence.”
Impact on Families and Schools
The event eliminated the cost of winter clothing for participating families, many of whom struggle to afford warm apparel during the harsh Oklahoma winter. Horn emphasized that providing a quality, new coat signals to children that they are valued by their community, teachers, and families.
“It’s empowering for them to know they deserve something good and new, and that the community supports them in that process,” Horn added.
Future Coat‑a‑Kid Events Planned
The foundation announced plans to hold additional Coat‑a‑Kid events throughout the district, aiming to ensure every student has a warm coat for the season. Parents and community members interested in supporting future events can learn more through the OKCPS Foundation’s website.
