OKC United owner pledges $9 million to keep MAPS 4 stadium on track

Oklahoma City’s ambitious MAPS 4 multipurpose stadium project faces higher construction costs, but a local private partner is helping to keep the timeline intact. Echo Sports, the investment group that owns the city’s professional soccer franchise OKC United, announced a $9 million contribution toward the stadium’s construction budget.

Why the extra money is needed

The 10,000‑seat venue, slated to host both soccer and football events, was originally priced at $121 million. As material and labor prices climb, city officials expect the total to rise. The MAPS 4 program has already set aside $6 million as a contingency, but the additional private funding will provide a cushion for any further escalations.

City officials welcome the partnership

“Most of the MAPS projects have partners that operate our facilities, and in this case, it’s Echo, and Echo has graciously agreed to help us out with construction to the tune of $9 million,” said David Todd, MAPS 4 program manager. Todd added that the money will be deposited into the general construction account, allowing the project to continue without delay.

He emphasized that the bulk of the construction financing still comes from MAPS 4, but the private infusion ensures that “there’s always things additionally you want, and costs continue to escalate.” The city hopes the partnership will keep the stadium on schedule for its planned 2028 opening.

Next steps for approval

The $9 million pledge still requires formal approval from the MAPS 4 Citizens Oversight Board, which is scheduled to meet this Thursday. Once authorized, the funds will be combined with existing public monies and managed by the MAPS 4 team.

Todd expressed optimism about the construction progress, noting that the project is already a year and a half into building. “Towards the middle of next year, you’ll really start seeing things take shape, and we’re just anxious to get it finished,” he said.

Impact on the community

The stadium is expected to become a hub for sports, concerts, and community events, providing new entertainment options for Oklahoma City residents and drawing visitors from across the region. By securing additional financing now, the city aims to avoid costly delays that could push back the opening and postpone the economic benefits the venue promises.

Local business leaders have praised the collaboration, noting that a vibrant, modern stadium can spur nearby development, create jobs, and enhance the city’s profile as a destination for major events.

About MAPS 4

MAPS 4 is a voter‑approved, $1.1 billion capital improvement program that funds a range of projects, including parks, streets, and public facilities. The stadium is one of the flagship initiatives under the program, reflecting the community’s desire for world‑class amenities.
