Leaders in Edmond, Norman, and Oklahoma City are collaborating on a commuter rail proposal to improve transit options, with funding potentially coming from a voter-approved sales tax initiative.

The proposed system, unveiled by Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt during his eighth State of the City address, would provide new ways for residents to travel to work, school, or events like football games.
Jason Ferbrache, interim executive director of One Transit, noted the need for the metro area to remain competitive with other major cities. “If you look at the top 20 cities in the nation, most, if not all, have a high-capacity transit system and a funded high-capacity transit system,” he said.
The plan, known as the One Transit system, would be funded through a sales tax initiative that voters would need to approve. Ferbrache explained that the initiative would cover both the construction and operation of the transit system while also leveraging local dollars to compete for federal funding.
