Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno announced plans to introduce legislation to end birthright citizenship, following a recent Supreme Court ruling that upheld the practice. The Supreme Court’s decision relied on a long-settled understanding of the 14th Amendment, which grants citizenship to anyone born in the United States, with very limited exceptions.
Legislation Details
The proposed legislation, dubbed the Immigration Stabilization Act of 2026, aims to crack down on criminal aliens and illegal reentry, target alien smugglers, and protect American workers with worksite enforcement. The bill also seeks to enforce state and local cooperation and defend citizenship and voting integrity.
Senator Moreno’s press release stated that he is reviving a bill initially introduced by former Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid in the early 1990s. Moreno expressed his disapproval of the Supreme Court’s ruling, stating that it ignored the 14th Amendment and handed a win to foreign enemies of the United States.
The legislation is expected to be introduced when Senator Moreno returns to Washington, D.C.
