Ohio Highway Patrol Urges Safe Travel Ahead of Busy Labor Day Weekend

Ohio families planning a Labor Day getaway should note that the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSP) is increasing its presence on the roads this weekend. AAA forecasts Thursday and Friday as the peak travel days, with the heaviest traffic expected between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. To avoid congestion, the patrol advises drivers to depart before 1 p.m. whenever possible.

Data‑Driven Enforcement for a Safer Holiday

The holiday marks the conclusion of what safety officials label the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer.” Last year, 27 people lost their lives in 23 crashes across Ohio during the four‑day Labor Day period, and 15 of those incidents involved impaired driving, according to OSP statistics. Sgt. Tyler Ross explained that the patrol’s approach is “data‑driven” – the numbers clearly show a spike in crashes each year, prompting a proactive response.

Troopers will be highly visible throughout the weekend, conducting random checks and pulling over drivers who exceed speed limits. In the first half of the weekend, OSP reported more than 400 OVI (operating a vehicle while impaired) arrests and issued over 150 citations to motorists traveling at 100 mph or faster.

Practical Tips for Families on the Road

Beyond enforcement, the patrol urges all travelers to practice basic safety habits: buckle up, keep phones out of reach, allow extra travel time, and arrange a sober ride before celebrations begin. These steps are especially important for those heading to major events such as Riverfest on Sunday, where crowds and traffic will be especially heavy.

Rising Fuel Costs Add to Travel Considerations

Drivers should also budget for higher gasoline prices. The ongoing conflict in Iran continues to pressure global markets, pushing prices up across the region. In Cincinnati, the average price sits around $3.72 per gallon – about 55 cents higher than this time last year. Covington’s average is $3.80, up 60 cents year‑over‑year, while Dearborn County drivers are seeing $3.57, roughly 27 cents more than a year ago. Indiana’s temporary gas tax suspension is keeping prices lower there for now, but that relief ends Saturday.

Looking Ahead

While the OSP hopes no tragedy occurs, the reality is that every year a holiday trip ends in a crash. “Nobody goes out and thinks they’re going to be involved in a traffic crash—whether they’re a victim, a passenger, or a driver,” Sgt. Ross said. “But unfortunately, it happens every single year. The patrol is data‑driven, so data tells us it’s going to be a deadly weekend.”

By staying alert, obeying speed limits, and planning sober transportation, Ohio families can help ensure that the Labor Day weekend remains a time for rest and celebration rather than sorrow.
