Prattville, Ala. – The Prattville YMCA is gearing up for one of the River Region’s most beloved culinary traditions: the Guardian Credit Union Great Grits Cook‑Off. The event will be held Saturday, October 17, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Willis Bradford Branch on McQueen Smith Road.
Community families invited to sample and compete
Teams from across the area have signed up to showcase their favorite grits recipes, ranging from classic Southern buttered grits to inventive twists with cheese, shrimp, or sweet corn. Attendees will have the chance to sample a variety of grits, vote for their favorite, and enjoy a relaxed morning with friends and neighbors.
Tickets and proceeds support youth scholarships
General admission tickets are $7 when purchased online and $10 at the door. All proceeds will go directly to the Prattville YMCA’s Coach a Child Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to local youth seeking to participate in sports, arts, and other enrichment programs.
How to get involved
Event organizers are still looking for additional teams to compete. Anyone with a cherished family grits recipe can register through the link provided on the YMCA’s website. Volunteers are also needed to help with set‑up, judging, and clean‑up, and the YMCA encourages community members to lend a hand.Action 8’s Estee Morrison recently sat down with YMCA staff members Bailey Fulford and Leela Bert to discuss the event’s history and its impact on local families. The interview, which is available on the station’s website, highlights how the Cook‑Off has become a staple of Prattville’s summer calendar and a vital fundraiser for youth programs.
Why the Great Grits Cook‑Off matters
Beyond the tasty competition, the Cook‑Off reflects the strong family values and community spirit that define Prattville.
