Artist Tracy Longley-Cook has always been fascinated by change, a concept that has taken on greater resonance in her life as she has experienced the loss of loved ones. This focus on change has influenced her work and her curation of the group exhibition ‘Metamorphosis’ at the Riffe Gallery.
Exploring the Liminal Space
The exhibition features a range of Ohio artists exploring the concept of change from different perspectives, including material, environmental, figurative, and emotional. Upon entering the gallery, attendees are greeted by a massive tapestry by Athens artist Melissa Haviland, which is casually draped into a flowing wave-like form.
Other artists, such as Cincinnati’s Melissa Lusk and Justin Teilhet, also explore the concept of change through their work. Lusk’s intricate weaving and Teilhet’s ceramic wall hangings both feature organic folds and shapes that evoke a sense of transformation.
The exhibition also includes more explicit explorations of change, such as Andrew Dailey’s ‘Tree, Past Tense,’ which will continue to evolve over the course of the exhibition as Dailey adds to the graphite drawing on the gallery wall.
