Two children were injured on Friday afternoon when their father, an off-duty Orange County deputy, was cleaning a semi-automatic rifle that accidentally discharged a single round, the sheriff’s office said.
The incident occurred around 12:55 p.m. Deputies responding to the call reported one of the children suffered a gunshot wound while the other was injured by shrapnel.
The children were transported to the hospital in stable condition. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.
Investigation Ongoing
Retired Orlando police chief Orlando Rolon shared his perspective on the incident, stating that law enforcement officers are trained on how to safely handle firearms, including during cleaning, and noted that best practices recommend ensuring a gun is unloaded before cleaning it.
Rolon added that the situation will be looked at just like any other situation involving a citizen, and there is potential for charges or administrative actions.
