Ocean City begins beach inspections and dune repairs after nor’easter disruption

Ocean City, Md. – After a powerful nor’easter battered the Mid‑Atlantic weekend, city officials moved quickly to assess damage along the ten‑mile stretch of Atlantic shoreline. Emergency Services Director Joe Theobold praised the decision to cancel the Ocean’s Calling music festival, noting it was the right call for public safety.

Beach and dune inspections underway

Crews began early Monday inspecting the beach for signs of erosion, sand loss, and any structural damage to the dunes that protect the city’s waterfront. Theobold explained that the city’s partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers includes periodic beach replenishment, a critical component for maintaining the barrier that shields homes and businesses from storm surge.

“It’s an all‑hands effort – state, federal and local partners working together to make sure our beaches are replenished and restored,” Theobold said. The inspection will determine whether additional sand needs to be placed to reinforce the dunes before the upcoming fall season.

Festival cancellation and upcoming events

The nor’easter forced the cancellation of the Ocean’s Calling music festival, a popular summer event that draws visitors from across the region. Theobold emphasized that the safety of residents and tourists was the top priority.

Looking ahead, the city’s sister event, Country Calling, is scheduled for Oct. 2‑3 and is expected to proceed as planned, weather permitting. Theobold encouraged attendees to remain vigilant and follow any guidance from local authorities.

Public‑safety reminders for fall visitors

With the beach patrol season ending Sunday, Theobold reminded the public that lifeguard services will be limited through September and October. He urged visitors to use common sense, stay within designated swimming areas, and respect any posted warnings.

“September and October are some of the best months here,” he said. “Just enjoy yourselves and use common sense when you come to Ocean City.”

Looking forward

The city’s emergency management team will continue monitoring coastal conditions as the nor’easter moves out of the region. Forecasts show a clearer outlook for early October, giving officials time to complete any necessary repairs before the next wave of tourists arrives.

Residents can stay informed through the city’s official website and social‑media channels, where updates on beach conditions, dune restoration, and any further advisories will be posted.
