Oakshire Brewing, a privately owned Oregon company that began in Eugene in 2006, has announced the closure of its 4,000‑square‑foot production brewery and three taproom locations in Eugene, Portland and Springfield. The decision follows a decade‑long struggle with rising operating costs, intensified competition in the craft‑beer market, and the lingering financial impact of the COVID‑19 pandemic.
History and growth
Founder and chief executive officer Jeff Althouse, a former public‑school math teacher, started brewing as a hobby before family and friends helped him launch Oakshire Brewing. The first taproom opened in 2007 out of necessity, and the brand expanded over the years with the Oakshire Public House in Eugene’s Whiteaker neighborhood (opened 2013), the Oakshire Beer Hall in northeast Portland (opened 2019), and the Oakshire Commons in Springfield (opened 2025).
Closure timeline
The Springfield location served its final customers on Sunday, Sept. 27. The Portland Beer Hall will close after service ends on Wednesday. The Eugene Public House has not set a definitive closing date, as the company coordinates with food‑cart operators on the transition schedule. Brewing operations will continue to package existing inventory until supplies run out.
Future prospects
Althouse expressed hope that a new owner might purchase the Eugene brewery site, building, and equipment as a package, allowing the brand to continue under fresh leadership. The Portland property is also for sale, and the company is open to discussions with any strong buyer interested in the locations or the Oakshire brand.
Community farewell
Oakshire’s 20th‑anniversary celebration, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 3, will double as a farewell gathering at the Eugene Public House, giving longtime patrons a final chance to say goodbye to a staple of the local craft‑beer scene.
“We’ve faced years of rising costs, increasing competition, the financial damage of COVID, and changes in how people gather to eat and drink,” the company said in its announcement. “We worked hard to adapt, but we can’t continue operating Oakshire as a whole.”
