The New York City Police Department (NYPD) announced that a multiagency effort to combat gun violence has removed more than 3,200 guns from New York City streets so far in 2026, including nearly 200 semi-automatic rifles, often referred to as ‘ghost guns’ due to their lack of serial numbers.

Collaboration and Results

Officials highlighted the results of the Gun Violence Strategies Partnership during a news conference, pointing to the collaboration between local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies as a key factor in targeting violent offenders. The partnership, led by the NYPD, includes dozens of agencies and has been meeting daily for the past five years to coordinate efforts against gun violence across the city.

According to Chauncey Parker, executive director of the New York/New Jersey High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, the group’s focus is narrow and deliberate, targeting the small number of people who are shooting and hurting others in New York City.

One example cited by officials was a group connected to the Bloods that trafficked 40 guns in Far Rockaway, Queens. Five defendants in the case have been arrested, according to authorities. Joseph Nocella Jr., U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, described the allegations, including the sale of guns out of apartments occupied by children.
