The Denver Public Library has announced its selection for the 2026 One Book One Denver program: ‘The Nickel Boys’ by Colson Whitehead. This novel, which won a Pulitzer Prize in 2020, tells the story of a Black teenager wrongly sent to a brutal reform school in Florida in the 1960s.
Community Events
The library will partner with several organizations to create free programming that aligns with the book in August and September. These events include a performance of a short play at the Buntport Theater, a musical story event at Central Park, and a dance and dialogue event at the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Center.
‘We are partnering with The Word, The Shop at MATTER, Buntport Theater, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, and more to bring programming inspired by the title to the city,’ said library communications coordinator Alvaro Sauceda Nuñez.
The Word, A Storytelling Sanctuary, Inc. is one of the partner organizations. ‘It’s a great match for us because what we do is promote voices from underserved communities and diverse backgrounds,’ said Chris Aguilar Garcia, who directs programs for The Word.
The library will also give away 3,500 books in English and Spanish, and The Shop at MATTER will sell the book. Author Colson Whitehead will give an author talk on September 25 at MCA Denver at the Holiday Theater.
