New York City officials are preparing to announce a major investment in 9/11 education programs for public‑school students on Thursday. The unveiling will take place at the Oculus of the World Trade Center in partnership with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum.
Local leaders champion the effort
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and City Council Speaker Julie Menin will present the initiative, which is designed to help future generations understand the significance of the September 11 attacks and their lasting impact on New York City and the nation. The announcement will be followed by a wreath‑laying ceremony honoring the nearly 3,000 victims of the attacks.
Recent remembrance for first‑responders
The announcement comes after a solemn ceremony on Wednesday that honored firefighters who have died from illnesses linked to their work at Ground Zero. Families placed flowers beneath the FDNY Memorial Wall at the department’s Brooklyn headquarters, where the names of 36 recently deceased members were added. More than 600 FDNY members have died from 9/11‑related illnesses since the attacks.
“Let us renew our devotion to those who are sick and our commitment to the families of those who have passed away,” Mayor Mamdani said. “And let us renew our responsibility to ensuring the sacrifice made for these 36 heroes is repaid with the same service and solidarity that defined each and every one of their lives.”
National commemorations
Next week, the National September 11 Memorial will host ceremonies expected to draw former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Joe Biden. President Donald Trump is not slated to attend the main ceremony but will host a separate September 8 event featuring a recovered steel beam from the World Trade Center site, with firefighters from New York and Washington expected to participate.
The new education program underscores the city’s commitment to preserving the memory of September 11 for students, ensuring that the lessons of courage, sacrifice and resilience remain a core part of the curriculum.
